POSITION TYPE: Professional, full time, with continuation contingent upon annual funding and successful performance.
SALARY RANGE: $42,000 – 55,000 per annum
START DATE: October 1, 2017
Purpose: TheCooperative Forestry Research Unit (CFRU) is a 36-member forest landowner / university cooperative that conducts applied scientific research to advance forestry practices on over 8.2 million acres across the state of Maine (http://www.umaine.edu/cfru). The CFRU is housed within the Center for Research on Sustainable Forests (CRSF) (https://crsf.umaine.edu) at the University of Maine (UMaine). The Research and Communications Coordinator coordinates research and communications programs for the CFRU within a team environment under the direction of the CFRU Director/Program Leader. The incumbent plays a key role in ongoing and new research studies by maintaining longterm field installations and the unit-wide research database, developing new project
proposals, and through assisting CFRU Cooperating Scientists and graduate students with field work, data management and statistical analyses. The position is also responsible for the outreach and communications aspects of the CFRU, including all technology transfer activities with CFRU member organizations, the Advisory Committee, and other professionals in the field of forest management.
Knowledge, skills and qualifications: The successful applicant will possess the following education, skills, knowledge, experience, and personal attributes:
· Master’s degree in forestry, silviculture, natural resources, or related field.
· Strong knowledge of applied forest management or natural resources research including detailed experience with advanced statistics and database design & maintenance, as demonstrated through relevant university course work and/or work experience.
· Proficiency with communications and technology transfer in an applied research environment desired; forestry or natural resources field preferred.
Essential duties and responsibilities: The incumbent will coordinate all CFRU field and laboratory research activities including research communications and other duties as assigned:
· Managing long-term CFRU research sites (including Maine’s Adaptive Silviculture Experiment Network, Commercial Thinning Research Network, Austin Pond, and Weymouth Point).
· Serving as safety coordinator to ensure that university safety policies and procedures are followed.
· Fostering development of new research proposals while ensuring a high degree of collaboration, coordination, resource sharing, and communication among research team members.
· Providing technical guidance and support in experimental design and installation, data management, and field and laboratory methods.
Supervisory responsibilities: The employee will be required to hire, supervise, and have formal authority for seasonal students and temporary employees and will ensure that all employees are trained and follow UMaine safety policies and procedures.
Background: The University of Maine is a Land Grant and Sea Grant university. The School of Forest Resources awards Bachelor of Science degrees in Forestry; Bioproducts and Bioenergy; and Parks, Recreation & Tourism; as well as Master of Science, Master of Forestry, and Doctoral degrees in Forest Resources. The School also manages 13,000 acres of forestland, including the 4,000-acre Penobscot Experimental Forest jointly managed with the USFS Northern Research Station.
The University of Maine is located in Orono, a small college town bounded by the Stillwater and Penobscot Rivers. The campus is just eight miles north of Bangor, one of the largest cities in Maine, and whose quality of life has earned it a place at the top of many national “best places” lists. The Bangor Region is centrally located in the state, providing nearby access to mountains, forests, rivers, lakes, major parks (Baxter State Park and Acadia National Park), and the Atlantic coast. Orono is a 4-hour drive from Boston, 4.5 hours from Quebec City, and 90 minutes from Bar Harbor.
