Harvest Manager – Weyerhaeuser – Coos Bay, OR

Weyerhaeuser – Western Timberlands has an opening for a Harvest Manager with our Coquille area operations team. This role is an integral part of the leadership team responsible for the forestry, engineering, and harvesting on our Coquille forest area assets, based out of Coos Bay, OR. This is a full-time, exempt position, reporting to the Coquille Area Team Leader.

This role is primarily responsible for contract harvesting operations including the management of safety, environmental stewardship, quality, production, and costs. Coordination with all other forest management operations is paramount (i.e. forestry, planning, road constructions and engineering).

  • Safety – Demonstrate, role model, and coordinate training on safety policies and safe work practices. Apply laws and safety regulations to active operations and address safety issues appropriately (unsafe acts, PPE, etc.). Lead safety meetings, perform pre-work safety inspections and follow up as needed. Actively participate in health and safety programs including near miss reporting. Conduct incident investigations and apply critical thinking to correctly identify root cause and appropriate corrective action to prevent reoccurrence.
  • Environment – Ensure compliance with state and federal statutes, environmental requirements and Weyerhaeuser resource and stewardship goals. Assess daily fire risk situation, fire equipment use and capabilities and perform fire drills/audits. Train contractors to our EMS and SFI standards and audit for conformance, correcting as necessary.
  • Quality – Estimate volumes, piece size, and determine feasibility of harvesting specific timber types. Confirm log quality by assessing log sorts, log value, customer needs, merchandising/value extraction and scaling process data.
  • Production – Develop logging prescriptions with input from engineers. Achieve high utilization rate for systems and equipment by advanced application of various harvesting systems as applied to topography and timber type. Evaluate harvest system capabilities and limitations and have advanced knowledge of skyline mechanics and payload limits. Manage felled and bucked inventory, monitor and direct daily cutting activities. Develop logging price and production plans by unit, daily and long-term tracking and evaluation of harvesting performance.
  • Cost – Performs cost analysis on individual machines, classifications, and systems. Negotiate, prepare and administer logging contracts for Contract Logging Operations. Responsible for developing annual budgets and delivering results against budget.
  • Contractor Relations – Apply leadership skills in managing contractor relationships, including evaluating performance and providing necessary feedback to ensure alignment with expectations. Work pro-actively identify and/or resolve issues to help ensure a mutually beneficial, long-term relationship.

Qualifications

Qualifications/Requirements: 

  • B.S. or B.A. in relevant field and 4 years of forestry/logging experience; or 9 years of experience in the logging industry. 
  • Minimum 2 years leadership/supervisory experience required. 
  • Northwest regional logging experience is preferred. 
  • Must be a highly motivated, self-directed team player. 
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral) needed to effectively function as part of a team. 
  • Strong analytical skills with proficiency in use of personal computers and MS office products (i.e. Word, Outlook, Excel) are required. 
  • Experience with Geographical Information Systems, and other industry related software is highly desirable. 
  • Current driver’s license is required as work involves driving company vehicles. 
  • Majority of work is spent in the field, much of it on steep or uneven ground covered with slash and brush. 
  • Field work accomplished under variety of weather conditions, which along with operational timing, may require occasional weekend work.
