The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has an exciting opportunity within our Engineering and General Services Division. If you are interested in designing bridges, foundations and retaining walls in the woods then look closer at this job announcement. The DNR Forest Road Program has 865 bridges, 1,000 fish passage culverts and 14,000 miles of forest road that needs to be maintained and on occasion replaced.  As a Design Engineer, you will design projects and prepare plans and specifications for construction, manage consulting engineers and provide engineering direct supervision of other engineers within DNR to maintain our road system that provides a revenue stream to schools and counties, and provides access for public recreation on DNR managed lands. Plus, you will visit and work in some specular sites and work with some awesome people.
 
Working in the serenity of a forest you will be assigned the most complex and difficult forest road engineering projects. To be successful you will need to come with good skills in the design, construction and maintenance of bridges, culverts and retaining walls. Having good customer relationship and communication skills will be important, because there are 50 engineers in DNR who you will work with on projects as the lead design engineer and engineering mentor.
 
DUTIES:
Responsibilities:
Design bridge foundations such has pile and cap structures for steel and concrete bridges.

Assemble type, size and location for new bridges while considering a variety of bridge types and foundations.
Design spread footings for bottomless arches and bridges.
Design retaining walls for bridge approaches, and stabilization of fill and cut slopes. 
Provide plans, specifications and engineers estimate for public works contracts. 
Provide structural engineering support in the load rating of bridges including in-house load rating of log stringer bridges. 
Manage the program’s bridge inspection program, which includes a mobile bridge inspection application, providing continuing education opportunities for our bridge inspectors, and mentoring our engineers who inspect bridges. 
Work with other programs in DNR on engineering projects, which could include trailheads for Recreation or demolition projects for Natural Areas. 
No client management, marketing or proposal development is needed, there is always plenty of engineering work that is diverse and spread across the state. 

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required Qualifications: Bachelors of Science in Forest Engineering, Civil Engineering or closely related field.
Four years of experience in transportation or forest engineering fields.
Professional Engineer in Washington State in the branch of civil engineering or similar field, or within 12 months of employment licensed as a professional engineer in Washington State in the branch or civil or logging engineering.
Ability to work on uneven terrain in all weather conditions.
The incumbent in this position is required to travel.
A valid driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates may be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
Our ideal candidate will also have the qualifications listed below:Certified bridge inspector with FHWA or comparable state program.
Experience in inspecting and load rating of bridges.
