Associate Professor/Senior Lecturer/Lecturer (Ref. AW03/130/0418)
Duties:
- Undergraduate teaching in compliance with the general focus of the Department, specifically in regard to Forest Engineering and related fields of timber harvesting, access development, logistics and ergonomics;
- Supervision of and leadership to postgraduate students;
- Developing and evaluating course material;
- Sourcing and managing external research funds;
- Conducting an active and productive research programme within the general focus of the Department, and publication of such research in relevant peer-reviewed and high-impact journals;
- Developing national and international research and industry partnerships and networks;

Involvement with community interaction projects;
- Involvement with administrative service delivery at departmental, Faculty and University level;
- Interacting and working collaboratively with the South African and international forest and related industries.
Requirements:
- PhD in Forestry or closely related field;
- Continuous and recognised research publications commensurate with the level of appointment;
- Demonstrated or proven ability to obtain and manage research funding;
- Proven track record in undergraduate lecturing;
- Proven track record of successful postgraduate supervision and leadership;
- Demonstrated or proven ability in respect of programme development and renewal;
- National and international recognition within the discipline;
- Proven administrative and managerial skills;
- Proven ability to work within multi-disciplinary teams and with the broader forest industry.
Recommendations:
- Proven leadership in departmental and faculty activities;
- A keen interest in a research field that is a good fit within the Department’s research profile;
- Strong background in modelling and operations research;
- Focus on the analysis of processes and systems for the management and utilisation of forests, and underlying economics pertaining to timber and biomass;
- Conversance with the application and use of new optimisation techinques related to forest operations and logistics;
- Recognition within the field or discipline on a national and/or international level;
- Relevant experience in industry-related, applied research;
- Language proficiency for meeting the requirements of a multilingual university;
- Proven leadership ability;
- NRF rating or equivalent;
- Relevant computer proficiency;
- Sound interpersonal skills.
