About Coos Bay and the Oregon Coast
Coos Bay is located on the Southern Oregon Coast on one of the most scenic stretches of blacktop in the United States: Oregon's Highway 101. The area offers easy access to world-class fishing and boating, 4-wheeling and hiking at the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, golfing at the renowed Bandon Dunes golf resort, and dozens of incredible beaches and campgrounds.
Position Details
The Sr. Logging Supervisor executes and administers harvesting activities producing approximately 30-40 MBF annually. The products in this geographic area include a conifer mix (Doug Fir, Western Hemlock) and some hardwoods (Red Alder). In addition, the position will assist in the execution and administration of road building and road maintenance activities.
As the Sr. Logging Supervisor, you will have the following responsibilities:
· Develop, negotiate and prepare contracts, and administer the contract terms for harvesting and roads. Approximately 95% of your time will be focused on harvest administration
· Maximize the value of current harvest and future value of the residual stands while managing the harvest administration for the 137,000 acres
· Build strong business relationships with contractors, customers, and internal team members
· Ensure optimal value is realized from harvesting and marketing activities by accounting for customer needs, log quality and market values of different log grades, sizes and species
· Work with the team to manage production to fulfill log delivery specifications and schedules
· Occasionally participate in the planning and implementation of road engineering and maintenance activities. You will spend approximately 5% of your time coordinating the need for roads
· Provide accurate information for budgeting and forecasting in order to meet or exceed budgeted targets and meet customer and contractor commitments
· Operational responsibilities include compliance with environmental and SFI principles, interaction with the public agencies, and interaction with other industry professionals.
This position will be part of an extremely high performing team consisting of seven (7) Plum Creek employees and the Manager of Harvesting and Roads. Additionally, you'll work closely with many external contractors. This will facilitate your ability to develop a broader view of Plum Creek's overall business including environmental, silviculture and reforestation, budgeting, and forest finance.
This position will require you to spend 75% of your time in the field in all types of terrain and weather conditions doing a variety of tasks such as planning/laying out, timber harvest, administering timber harvest contracts, ensuring wood is merchandised to the correct market, timber security, road layout/maintenance and supply chain management. Approximately 25% of your time will be spent on administrative tasks such as performing updates in Plum Creek's GIS system and other necessary office work.
Education:
· Bachelor's degree in Forestry, Forest Engineering or a related field required
Experience:
· Five or more years of Forest Management experience or equivalent experience in a related field required
· Working knowledge and experience of forestry, logging systems and related laws, including environmental and SFI and BMPs required
· One to two years experience in contract administration strongly preferred (this may be in silviculture or other areas of general forestry)
· Experience performing cost/benefit analyses to determine the best alternatives in log flow which enhances the value of our assets strongly preferred
· One to two years of experience in harvest administration managing logging crews and harvest planning is a plus
Skills:
· Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of harvesting, harvest planning, project layout, negotiating and general forestry operations with specific working knowledge of SFI, timber harvesting, timber cruising, and timber merchandising
· Solid personal computer skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and GIS required
· Working within a team setting to meet or exceed the objectives of the group
· Critical thinking, creativity, and data analysis are important attributes. Must be able to demonstrate the ability to analyze the financial aspects of harvesting including the analysis of cost/benefits and net margins
· Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with co-workers, contractors and agencies
· Solid verbal and written communications skills are important
Compensation:
· Targeted starting base salary: $58,400 – $78,400
· Up to 22% annual bonus potential
