2025 HONOREE – Awatif Hassan

Dr. Awatif E. Hassan is a pioneering forest engineer, inventor, and educator whose four-decade career helped establish forest engineering as a recognized, rigorous discipline. A COFE member since its founding in 1978, she chaired or co-chaired the organization's annual meetings in 1990 (Kill Devil Hills, NC), 1995 (Cashiers, NC), and 2012 (New Bern, NC).

Dr. Hassan earned her B.S. in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Alexandria, Egypt, in 1959 — the first woman to graduate in that field there. She went on to earn her M.S. (1964) and Ph.D. (1968) in Engineering-Agriculture from the University of California, Davis, becoming the first woman in the United States to hold a doctorate in agricultural engineering.

After early faculty positions at the University of Maine, University of Alexandria, and Cairo High Polytechnic Institute, Dr. Hassan joined North Carolina State University in 1975 as Associate Professor and Director of the Industry-NCSU Forestry Equipment Cooperative (FECO), a role she held through 1980 while working with 10 wood-products companies and several agencies on applied equipment research. She was promoted to Professor of Forest Engineering in 1980 and later served as Director of Undergraduate Programs in the Department of Forestry (1996–2003). She retired as full professor and was granted status as Professor Emerita.

Her research spanned mechanized forest regeneration, precision nursery seeding, skidder performance and payloads, tire/terrain interactions, and soil compaction and recovery after harvest. This work produced two U.S. patents — for a vacuum drum planter and a spot-planting seedling apparatus — the latter of which was commercially licensed in 1983.

Dr. Hassan chaired the committee that organized the landmark 1981 Symposium on Engineering Systems for Forest Regeneration, drawing over 200 participants from 12 countries and producing proceedings still used in forest engineering courses decades later. She was elected an ASABE Fellow in 2007 and held leadership roles across ASAE/ASABE, IUFRO, and ISTVS, including chairing the effort to formally establish ASAE's Forest Engineering Group.

Over her career, Dr. Hassan authored more than 110 publications, including over 30 refereed journal articles, and served on editorial boards for the Journal of Terramechanics, the Journal of Forest Engineering, and Forest Mechanization. Her legacy as an early trailblazer for women in engineering was recognized in the 2006 book Changing Our World: True Stories of Women Engineers.
