The Department of Forest Engineering, Resources and Management at Oregon State University is seeking a qualified and highly motivated M.S. graduate student to conduct research in forest engineering and operations. The research project focuses on safety in logging operations in traditional cable logging as well as advancing understanding of newer harvesting technology in steep slopes such as tether-assist harvesters. In order to be successful, the student will need to develop a good understanding on how these systems work, focusing on their mechanics and/or worker safety. The student should have strong math and analytical skills, interest in subjects related to forest operations and a willingness to take safety training for conducting outdoor fieldwork. Research will require field data collection and spending time in the forest.
The position is available beginning fall term 2018. This position is a full-time (20-hr per week) graduate research assistantship that includes a stipend and tuition waiver for a 2-year academic program.
The selected student will participate in the Department’s Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) degree program. The SFM graduate program emphasizes the management of forests to meet a defined set of ecological, economic, and social criteria. The program provides a strong grounding in the principles and techniques of active management of forests to improve forest health and condition while producing a full range of products and ecosystems services. The Department of Forest Engineering, Resources and Management is recognized throughout the world for excellence in graduate student education, creative problem-solving research, and innovative extended education. Graduate students within the College of Forestry have access to research forests only 20 minutes away from campus.
