Forest Engineering Family – Growing Forward from Our Roots

September 27-30, 2021  --  VIRTUAL MEETING   --  WEBSITE:  cofe-formec2021.org

Due to impacts from COVID-19, the COFE - FORMEC 2020 Joint Meeting originally scheduled for September 27-30, 2020 in Corvallis, Oregon, USA has been rescheduled to a virtual meeting in September 2021.

The 43rd annual meeting of the Council on Forest Engineering (COFE) and the 53rd annual meeting of the International Symposium on Forest Mechanization (FORMEC) will occur jointly as a virtual meeting in 2021.  This event will be the second of the three consecutive annual joint meetings scheduled between COFE and FORMEC.

The 2021 joint virtual meeting will follow the historic first joint meeting held in Hungary/Austria in 2019, and lead to the third joint meeting in 2022, which will be held as an in-person meeting in Corvallis, Oregon, along with IUFRO All-Division 3 and Doctoral Conferences.

The event theme, ‘Forest Engineering Family – Growing Forward from Our Roots’, will guide us in building One Big Family of Forest Engineering across continents and sectors.  Together, we will learn from the legacy of previous generations, tackle present forest engineering challenges, map our future, and empower our next generations.

Written by Christian Kanzian and Woodam Chung

For the first time in their history, FORMEC and COFE co-organized a joint annual meeting in Hungary/Austria, October 6-9, 2019.  The meeting was also the result of the joint venture between the University of Sopron, Hungary and the University of Life Sciences Vienna, Austria as hosting organizations.  A total of 280 participants from 30 countries attended this year meeting including over 30 participants from North America.  The conference hosted 110 presentations spread over three parallel sessions in two days that provided insight in the latest development in forest engineering research and technology.  A digital poster session allowed 55 posters to be accessible via web and a kiosk screen. Two keynote sessions presented by six speakers (Rasmus Astrup, Clement Atzberger, Chad Bolding, Woodam Chung, Hans Heinimann, and Martin Kühmaier) focused on smart forestry, sustainability and digitalization in forest operations.
